So…we made it. Barely. After a tousle with the initial moving company we scrambled at the last moment and were able to find an alternate.
Enough of that, though. Because the rare updates I’ve been making to this blog lately have been completely moving related. And I’m sure you’re all like “yawn.”
In any case, we are currently enjoying a week of vacation out on Long Island. One thing I’ve realized over the last several days is that travel with a 1.5 year old is significantly different than travel with a 4 month old (yes, the last time we enjoyed a *relaxing* vacation, Peanut was a baby). Peanut is just busy. There’s absolutely no other way of describing it. Why and how she finds the energy is completely beyond me, as I’m close to croaking. My legs are twice as long (maybe three times, in fact), and I move half as quickly. You do the math (I can barely work a calculator, much less a brain. And that was true even before pregnancy).
I used to plan for vacation by carefully selecting each of the gossip magazines I would consume. While preparing to leave on Monday, this barely even crossed my mind. Scratch that. It didn’t cross my mind at all. I was more concerned with whether we had the right number of swim diapers. The appropriate lovies. The pajamas. The right sippy cups.
Don’t get me wrong – I’m not complaining. I’m still enjoying the sun. The beach. The pool. It’s just…different. Like so many other things, this transition is indicative of how life has changed, so significantly, with toddler.
How are your vacations different now? And do you miss the old way?

it’s so great to see you again, sarah! I’ve been wondering how things were going with the move. enjoy the rest of your vaca!
Oh I had to laugh reading this. Welcome back Sarah by the way. We are leaving for Hilton Head next Saturday and I said to my husband I was not looking forward to getting ready. He seemed bemused by this comment as if all you do is get out a suitcase and throw a few things in it. Oh my, the planning needed to ensure all the essentials of a preschoolers life will end up at the other side of the journey with us is horrendous. Last year I took several books with me and read about 10 pages during the entire week on the beach. As you say, it is just endless activity. Fun, but not really a vacation
Lol! The fact that children become so agile and curious is the very reason second, third, fourth honeymoons were invented.
Can you believe this time last year they were just babies – BABIES??? I watched a video today of Soleil at 5 months last August *sigh*. Hells yeah on the busy stage now!! I just wrote today about my reflection on quiet moments, remembering how they used to be and how they disappear quickly now. Very rarely I do miss the old way, but more often I marvel at the wonders that a busy toddler brings into each new day.
I’m glad to see you back in blogland! Vacations? We haven’t tried that with a toddler in tow yet. I was in NYC for the conference this weekend, but that didn’t really count.
Ha, ha, ha….I have 5 girls. I don’t want to scare you. I’ll save my vacation stories. It’s really not fun going to the beach or water park when you are the sole women to a large family of girls.
Congratulaions on finishing up with your move!! That is great news. And so happy you are “vacationing” now. That is if you can ever call a trip with a toddler a vacay. In my opinion, not really. I love being with my kids and we are actually about to take a trip this week to Michigan for a week to visit my dad. It will be awesome, fun, exciting, and fantastic.
But relaxing? Probably not. But that’s okay. I think I’m over it now. Like you said, I don’t even think about what reading material to bring for myself anymore. I’m more concerned about whether we have enough toys and activities to keep them busy on the flight over and then in the Michigan cottage so I don’t go crazy and jump into the lake while we are “on vacation.”
we just got back from Hawaii and I had all the same experiences. It was so much fun but YES, so different.
The bonus were Elliot’s naps. Twice a day I got to veg on the couch in the condo and read. So, a bit of my “old” kind of vacation got to sneak in.
I have learned unless you are willing and able to vacation with your spouse alone…traveling with children, of any age, is not a vacation. It is a practice torture and patience.

leopard business cards To me, it’s always a good idea to always carry two sacks of something when you walk around. That way, if anybody says, ‘Hey, can you give me a hand,’ you can say, ‘Sorry, got these sacks.’
christian business cards Goodbye, goodbye, I hate the word. Solitude has long since turned brown and withered, sitting bitter in my mouth and heavy in my veins.
