A vacation

We’re back and fully unpacked from a week in the Hamptons. Notice I’m not calling it a “vacation”; I’ve come to realize there’s no word in the English language to describe travel with a small person. It’s certainly not a “vacation” in the traditional sense; just more of the same exhaustion in a different location. Particularly when you’re sharing a room with your two year old (as were we). When we left eight days ago Peanut was sleeping until anywhere between 7 and 8am. This morning she woke up at 5:30 (ready to party, naturally). Of course, that’s another story – and another lesson. I’m not sure we’ll ever sleep in the immediate environs of any related toddler again.

At least not by choice.

Still, getting away gave us an opportunity to do some things we rarely have time for (or simply aren’t possible) at home. There was plenty of swimming, sunning, and laughter. Sandcastles were built, digging was productive, and pails were filled with shells. Rocks – worn smooth by the waves – were rubbed and admired. Sticky fingers were the rule, not the exception.

And in a world where it’s sometimes difficult to share parenting equally because of pesky things like work schedules and long hours, Daddy was able to get his time in the sun. Literally and figuratively.

Priceless.

Yep holidays are the kind where you relax and read for a week anymore, but its nice to be together as a family and not have to feel like you need to clean, cook etc. The wind down is nice for everyone.

We are headed to the shore for a week very soon and you’ve just reminded me how much work it will actually be with the little ones!

Glad you had a good time!

  3. We are home and unpacked from a week at the Cape…and now I need a vacation from the vacation! We were on the 5:30am plan too, as the house was really bright. Had a great time, but my, how vacations have changed! I actually have a post in my head about that very thing…just have to find time to write it! Glad you got some fun time in the sun!!

Welcome back. You had some great weather and I’m loving your swimsuit! We’re still out here. Week 2 and I share your sentiments exactly. It’s a nice, refreshing change but I’m exhausted!

Glad to hear you had some nice family time away. I can so relate to the room sharing with a toddler! After four nights of sharing a room with our two kids, returning to our own bed was such a treat. Can’t wait to hear all about the fun you had.

  6. Not a vacation, just a change of scenery. But a scene with sand and a pool and an extra set of hands is a good one. :) Welcome back!

  7. That suit? Simply gorg on you.

    The babe? Cute beyond words.

    Those pictures? Priceless!

Glad you got a little change in scenery. =)

  8. Vacations sure are different with kids! Glad you were able to spend a week of great quality family time!!

  9. Looks like you guys had a blast!

  10. Looks like you all had such a wonderful time. I could relate to how it’s not always a vacation traveling with a little one, especially when you’re all in the same room!

  11. Welcome back, Love! I learned it the hard way when Aiden and I went to Hawaii last summer for one of my best friends’ wedding. It’s definitely not a vacation, just a “family trip” as I like to call it. LOL. And yes, it can be exhausting. But you look great in that swimsuit and Peanut looks priceless. And that picture with her dad, LOVE IT!

gorgeous pics! You are in my head on this one, indeed. I am a *little* jealous when people say they are going away for a week, but part of me feels defeated before we even book the hotel now. My envy now is aimed at anyone who drinks champagne while wearing a bikini.

btw, saw a lovely pic of you recently — someone tweeted maybe?– so pretty lady!

    cheers, wb

I love it out east. Vacation is definitely different with children. Fun in the sun is always enjoyable. I used to love a nap after being at the beach.
Why don’t children love to do that too?
Glad you had a great time!

YAY! Hooray for family time! And I know exactly what you mean about vacas not being vacas!

That’s what vacations are all about…reveling in the exceptions! :)
